Weeding with Tree Trust

Meem did its first volunteering effort last week with the Tree Trust. We went to the Midtown Greenway for weeding. It was hard work but it was worth it. I would like to personally that everyone who showed up for this effort. Here are the before and after pictures of one side of the lot where were weeding.

MEEM’s Mission in Lego

What better way to get our message across than via Lego! We asked the resourceful Abu Pokemon to do an advertisement for us and here is the result. Here is Meem in the imagery of Abu Pokemon. While Abu Pokemon may be the artist, the words are entirely ours!

Peace be upon you. Aurangzeb and Nandita would like to welcome you to Meem’s website. Here is MEEM’s mission statement in a visual form.

(II) MEEM:

MEEM is an acronym that stands for “Minnesota Ecology and Environmental Muslims.” Our purpose is to create environmental awareness and promote a more humble outlook towards conserving our footprint on planet Earth. MEEM is a network of environmentally conscious Muslims centered around the Minneapolis-Saint Paul Twin Cities area where our aim is to spread awareness about the environment, help make people better and environmentally conscious choices, volunteer for environmental causes and try to make the word a better place for all.

Here are the various ways in which you can help and spread environmental Awareness

(III) Reducing your carbon footprint:

(a) Whenever possible, instead of driving cars ….

(b) Take public transportation like buses.

(c) Or ride bikes if that is possible

(IV) Recycle:

(a) Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) told us that cleanliness is half of faith. Thus if you see trash lying here and there and it is in your capacity to take care of it …

Then be sure to properly dispose of it. Recycle whenever you can.

Use recyclable bags instead of plastic bags.

(V) Plant Trees:

Plant trees. This is good for the environment and this is what the Prophet (peace be upon him) has commanded us to do.

(VI) Spread the word:

If you are not going to take these words from me then …

Take these words from scholars who have discussed the importance of the environment in relation to the concept vice-regency of humankind.

Spread the word amongst other people, in chats, discussions, in masjids, khutbas etc. insha’Allah you will get blessings (ajar) for this.

(VIII) Last Word:

If we sit as idle spectators and do not do anything then our descendants will inherit a morbid planet.

Or in artificial environments where they may not be able to enjoy many of the things that we have available.

Together we can and we will make a difference, insha’Allah.

First Post: Ad Initium

This is officially the very first post for the MEEM blog. MEEM is an acronym that stands for “Minnesota Ecological and Environmental Muslims.” Our purpose is to create environmental awareness and promote a more humble outlook towards conserving our footprint on planet Earth. MEEM is a network of environmentally conscious Muslims centered around the Minneapolis-Saint Paul Twin Cities area where our aim is to spread awareness about the environment, help make people better and environmentally conscious choices, volunteer for environmental causes and try to make the word a better place for all.

Some relevant resources about relevant Islamic justifications for the environmentalist movement are at in the resources section. The about section give more information about our background. I had the idea of an environmental organization in Minnesota for quite some time. When I finally decided to materialize it, I knew that one of the best person to talk to would be Nandita and thus MEEM was born. This blog will chronicle MEEM’s plans, activities, events etc, so stay tuned.
